Last month, Homecoming Week was held at American International College and each day of the week held a different Homecoming event. One of the events held was a Powder Puff Tournament.

For those who don’t know, Powder Puff is a female football game in which is played by the rules of Flag Football. Flag Football is a little to no-contact sport. Powder Puff originated in the United States and Canada in 1972 and is mainly played by high school Juniors and Seniors.

The Powder Puff Tournament was held on Wednesday, October 12 under the lights at Abdow Field at AIC. Each class competed against each other for their chance at victory.

The rundown was as follows: Freshmen vs. Seniors, and Sophomores vs. Juniors, and then winner vs. winner. It was a close game all around but the team that ended up taking home victory from the annual Powder Puff Tournament was the Junior Class.

Brittany Chalmers is a student from the Junior class who came to support at the tournament. She was hopeful that her class would take home the win and luckily for her, and the rest of the class of 2018, they did.

“I’m so glad that the Juniors won!” Chalmers exclaimed. When asked what she thought of the whole event, Chalmers said: “I thought the event itself was really good and the girls played hard.”

Although Chalmers was overjoyed that the Juniors had won, Sophomore Brian LaValley had opposing feelings about the game.

“I’m kind of upset the Sophomores didn’t win, but for it being the first Powder Puff game the school put on, it went really well”, LaValley said.

The tournament was planned and run by Campus Recreation and Student Activities Board, a student-run club on campus that hosts many of the Homecoming Week events.

President of Student Activities Board and AIC senior, Bridget Grim was overjoyed with the entirety of the event.

“I am so happy that this event did so well. So much hard work was put into planning this event and the fact that it did so well, makes me so happy,” said Grim.

As goes for the collaboration of the tournament, Grim stated: “I originally had the idea and I brought it up to my Executive Board of Student Activities and everyone loved the idea. Unfortunately, we couldn’t plan this event on our own so we had to ask and get help from Campus Recreation.”

When asked if she thinks this will become an annual event, Grim was hopeful.

“I think so. This was only the first year of doing it and it went so well, we had a great turnout with both the players and the support from their classmates,” Grim said.

She went on to say that “everyone who came out seemed to enjoy themselves so yes, I think this will become an annual event for Homecoming.”

Overall, nothing but positive feedback came from students who attended this event and this was a good way for students to take a breather from their studies, get some exercise, and enjoy the company of each other.

Hopefully, if everyone has their way, the Powder Puff Tournament will return next year, and become an annual Homecoming Week Event.
