Is Trump Fit for Presidency?

Shawn Reid, Staff Writer

The Republican presidential debate held last month on September 16 was as controversial as ever, but the question still remains: can we trust Donald Trump if he were to be the next president of the United States?

Being the financial and business icon that he is, many believe Trump has objectified some jarring ideas for this country, leading many to speculate that they cannot trust him.

That’s especially obvious after the many comments he has directed towards illegal immigrants crossing the southern order of the United States.

Many remain uncomfortable with Trump’s aggressive campaign so far. In his campaigning, it seems as if Trump wants the audience to look at him as some sort of knight in shining armor coming to save the country from the clutches of other politicians, but how can that be possible if he instills fear into his audience?

AIC students share the hesitation that many people nationwide have had regarding Trump.

Liana Martinez said that due to her ethnicity, she is watching Trump closely.

“Me being a young Latina woman, I do feel comfortable to what Trump wants to do,” Martinez said. “His views on illegal immigration for example may be aggressive, but he is making good points. If more illegal immigrants keep coming to this country to work and take those jobs, how will the citizens in this country find work?” she asked.

She makes a good point, but realistically there are many other reasons to why Americans can’t find work; among them corporations moving to other countries, workers not having a high enough education status, among other factors.

The big topics of last month’s debate were the candidates’ opinions on immigration, same sex marriage, Iran’s nuclear deal, the economy, and the conservative move to defund Planned Parenthood.

During the debate, there was harsh questioning from other Republicans and moderators. But it was pretty clear that the spotlight was on Donald Trump.

So can we trust a man with little to no experience to handle these problems? In the debate, he gave loud answers and would only skim over the questions that he was being asked.

So is Trump ready to really lead this country?

AIC freshman Dante Woods summed it up for many.

“I just don’t feel comfortable with Donald Trump running for president because of the fact that he is a businessman and not a politician,” Woods said. “That is going to make me think that he is going to treat a country full of hardworking Americans like he would treat people working in a Fortune 500 company.”

Many are turned off by Trump and feel he seems to be unfit for office because of his enthusiasm.

Ashley Gosselin, also an AIC freshman, said she finds Trump on the scary side.

“Donald Trump is a funny guy, but he scares me a little bit,” Gosselin said. “He’s so aggressive with the other candidates, it just makes me think, what if we were on the verge of war with another country? He’d probably start World War III if he wanted to.”

While Trump certainly has his following and while he is definitely interested in becoming president, are all of his intentions good?

So far in the early race for presidency, he has been blatant in of all his answers on how he would actually help this country. Granted, to a certain extent he does have some pretty good ideas but Trump does not seem to be the right candidate cut out for the job.
