Even on a cloudy day it still is a casual American International College day, with classmates and friends hanging out on steps socializing with laughter.

Recently, Professor John Nordell’s Digital Photography 1 class embarked on an impromptu assignment with a tight deadline. The goal: to capture “The AIC Experience.”

“In my Digital Photography 1 class, I explained the workflow of photo assignments in a newspaper. I also related a late breaking newspaper assignment I once received, for which I had only 50 minutes to go out and find relevant subject matter, shoot pictures, return to the newsroom, download the images and get them into the production system to meet my deadline.

I explained that in rush situations like this, you have to plan your time carefully. If you linger in the field to get the perfect photograph, you might not get the photo into the system in timely manner and thus miss the deadline. Ouch!

After relating this story, I announced to class, ‘Okay, let’s imagine that I am the Yellow Jacket photo editor and you are all my photographers.  A planned story just fell through and we need some images right away to fill the space. You have 45 minutes to go out and capture photos that portray ‘The AIC Experience,’ images that represent student life on campus.’”

I encouraged students to plan their time wisely, to estimate the time needed for each step of the process to ensure they met the deadline. Given this backstory, I hope you have an even greater appreciation for the quality of these images.” — Professor John Nordell
