On Christmas Day, “The Revenant,” the biographical thriller from New Regencies Pictures starring actors Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio premiered across the nation.

The plot of the movie follows the life of the American frontiersman Hugh Glass, played by DiCaprio, who sustains severe life threatening injuries due to an attack attack from a mother grizzly bear protecting her cub.

Glass manages to kill the bear after the mauling but is unable to move or talk for a few days.

When he is rescued by his team, they decide that it would be too much of a hassle to carry his crippled body, so that’s when the leader – Captain Andrew Henry, played well by Domhnall Gleeson – chooses two people to stay with Glass and his son for the time being until they come back.

The leader of the group didn’t realize that one of the men that he chose, John Fitzgerald (played by Hardy) despises Glass, let alone wants to care for him in a wintery cold forest.

So after the group left, he decides to forcibly kill Glass but ends up killing Glass’ son Hawk, played by Forrest Goodluck. After he does this, Fitzgerald tricks the other man there, Jim Bridger (played by Will Poulter), into leaving Glass for dead.

When they leave, Glass is now able to move but with great pain, and vows to get revenge on the man who killed his son.

That’s when he has to fight his way through the freezing cold conditions, through Native American warriors, and through crude, sometimes brutal Frenchmen to find his way home.

The movie itself was very nerve-wracking due to its intense scenes. Not to mention the fact that the entire movie was filmed differently to show close-up and intense scenes of running during the actors’ screen time.

However, Director Alejandro González Iñárritu makes up for this by inserting a lot of emotional scenes to keep things moving both physically and emotionally.

This movie is over two hours long, making it evident that if at some point if you lose interest in the storyline then you will probably fall asleep.

AIC freshman Dante Woods gave the film a good rating.

“I loved this movie,” Woods said. “It was so crazy when he was attacked by that bear. I really thought he was going to die.”

This can further prove that the movie appeals to people who will likely only watch action-heavy or emotional movies.

For those who prefer comedy or romances, then chances are “The Revenant” probably isn’t the best choice to see. But for action film fans, this is a must-see.

DiCaprio’s performance was 10 out of 10. He recently won the Golden Globe’s Best Actor in a drama film for the role, and has been nominated for the coveted Best Actor award at The Oscars.

This film gives the audience the feeling of actually being in the movie. With that being said, it should be in no time that DiCaprio finally gets the Oscar that he deserves from other performances such as “Titanic,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and even “Inception.”

Another AIC freshman, Liana Martinez, also loved “The Revenant.”

“I honestly believe that this is one of his best movies ever, and I don’t even like him,” Martinez said of the movie and its star.

This shows that regardless of the genre or personal feelings towards an actor, putting a good plot together with great actors makes for a great movie, which is what Alejandro González Iñárritu set out to do.

In any case, this really did turn out to be a realistic, bone-chilling, true story thriller that had the audience on the edge of their seats the entire time.

Although there were some hiccups along the way – such as the fact that it did drag out to nearly two and a half hours long – it easily makes it up through unexpected action scenes. Overall, “The Revenant” deserves a top rating.
