The huge Winter Storm Jonas that rocked most of the east coast in late January barely passed over Springfield, leaving a dusting of about an inch that paled in comparison to the inches of snow that fell over cities like Washington DC, New York and Philadelphia.  Parts of Massachusetts received a lot of snow but Springfield did not receive much.

On Monday the 8th of February, Springfield received another round of snow and received more on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. More snow is forecasted for the rest of the week, which means more chances of snow days for AIC students and more opportunities to play in the snow.

Compared with the snowfall last year, Springfield and surrounding towns are stunned by how little snow they’ve received.

Allison Roy, a 20 year-old AIC student who resides in Chicopee is definitely surprised at the quiet winter thus far.

“It’s just crazy because last year we had so much snow, and this year I feel like we’ve barely had any,” Roy said.

The lack of snow this brings mixed emotions for Roy and friends, as they used last years’ numerous snow days and huge amounts of snow to create massive sled jumps, go skiing and stage other snow-related activities.

“I hated the amount of snow we got last year, but I don’t like not getting any at all, so the snow we’ve had this week is perfect,” explained Roy.

UntitledRoy and her boyfriend Cameron Kagan, 18 and cousin Travis Seymour (also an AIC student), both from Chicopee, love making huge sledding ramps in Seymour’s Chicopee backyard. The jump they’ve made today spans about 25 feet in length, down a steep hill and then at the bottom is a small but steep jump that catapults the person sledding to huge heights.

“Cam nearly wiped out and hit his face on the ground but luckily he saved himself,” Roy said, giggling about her boyfriend’s misfortunes.  Although the activity sounds dangerous, it does look like a heap of fun for a snow day bored at home.
