A small room can be found across from the Stinger Pub with only one little window, three chairs, three microphones and three pairs of headphones. This is the new radio studio for the newly-formed WAIC, and it’s up and ready to go.

Salvador Harold, a young, passionate guy with dark curly hair from the cultural city of Los Angeles, Calif., recently started building up a new student organization at American International College  – WAIC Radio.

Harold, a junior, came to AIC as a communications major and was always interested in the broadcasting industry. The school started building a radio station during the course of the DC renovation, but had no one to run it.

“I am a communications major here at AIC and my dream has always been to work in broadcasting,” said Harold. “Unfortunately the school didn’t have a radio station when I got here so I asked about it. As an answer I got a key to today’s new studio and the permission to build up WAIC Radio.”

Communications professor Marty Langford is the club’s faculty advisor. The head of the club (the e-board) includes four members: Harold is the president of the station, while junior Austin Fair is the vice president, sophomore Malik Webb is the secretary, and sophomore Anthony Lawson is treasurer. The e-board makes sure aspects such as the organization’s constitution and budget etc. are approved on time.

“We had to go through a lot of paperwork and conversations which asked for patience. But finally we are on the finish line to get WAIC launched,” Harold said with a relieved smile.

WAIC will be launching at the end of the month. With the launch of the station, there will be a launch party to promote it. The launch party will also take place at the end of the month.

There will be live music at the launch party featuring some of AIC’s very own musical talent including Freshman, Andy Brown and Brian Maurer. Vice president Fair will also be performing at the party.

There will also be a live DJ, giveaways, and contests so this launch party is something that you don’t want to miss, so keep your eyes and ears open for a date!

But not only the four e-board members are working hard. The other WAIC members are passionate and ready for the launch. The club already has some members but is always looking for more to host shows or to just to be a part of the club.

After the launch party the station will be on air every day, including the weekends.

“We are planning to have an almost 24/7 content like a legit radio station. Therefore, people interested in broadcasting are more than welcome to join and support us,” Harold explains.

“Every member will work between 2 to 3 hours a day,” Fair stated.

A lot of advertisement for the newly-born club is already happening. Flyers are hanging all around campus, informing students and faculty members to follow the station on social media accounts such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, SoundCloud and YouTube – @WAICRadio.

There will be a signal for the radio station in the Dining Commons, the Hive, and the Stinger.

“Students will listen to the station both voluntarily or unintentionally since we will be playing in locations like the DC, the Hive and the Stinger and hopefully they will share it with their friends and family back home,” said Harold.

Harold also noted that there if you are off campus or just in your room and you still want to listen, there will be an app where you can listen in as well.

If you also missed a particular show, WAIC will have its own YouTube channel with multiple playlists you can listen to. There will also be livestreams of the sporting events on campus so you can watch on the go.

The main focus for WAIC is to talk about not only what’s going on at AIC, but what is going on around all of Springfield, New England, and even all around the world.

“We really want to cover all the bases,” Fair said. “WAIC will be playing all genres of music, cover political and sports news and also talk about what is going on in our region and the whole world. So it will be a mix between playing music and discussions.”

“It’s about the students first,” Fair added.

If listeners want the station to play a specific song, or want them to talk about something in particular, you can tweet them suggestions. Members are also sharing their playlists, favorite songs and themed music.

“Students are also welcome to give us new ideas if they see us around campus to help us be the voice of the school. It’s about the students first,” Fair explained.

Harold says his favorite WAIC slogan is that the club is “looking for world domination.”

“We’re taking over the world!” Harold exclaimed.

Students can reach out to inform the club about new ideas or if they are interested in joining the WAIC team, via email [email protected] or email the president Sal Harold himself at [email protected].
