Every now and again, musicians will step outside of their normal boundaries and create a project to try and expand their fanbase, or step into a new creative space.

Notable artists with historic switches in sound on a higher level could include Michael Jackson’s darker, rock-influenced revamped style on his album “Thriller,” or Kanye West’s brave heavy-hitting “Yeezus” album that shocked the Hip Hop world.

Often times artists can miss the target when they stretch outside the box, and PartyNextDoor’s latest effort “Seven EP” was as uninteresting as it was lazy.

Aside from the standout record “Bestfriends” getting praise from different areas, PND’s switch from his usual smooth RnB sound into the typical new era sound was a miss. His new project sounds as if he had just listened to Young Thug’s new album and was inspired to keep the wave going. PND usually has a consistent level of content and quality RnB music that has been missing from Hip Hop culture for quite some time, so when artists like him leave their respective spot on the throne it is a disappointment.

PartyNextDoor possibly could just be buying time for himself to put out the quality that we are used to so fans shouldn’t fret about the new sound becoming consistent. As “Seven” is only an EP, PND might have a full-length album up his sleeve that could bring him back to the top of the Rnb charts once again.
