SPRINGFIELD – The day has finally come.

Every year Apple seems to release it’s newest and best technological advanced iPhone come mid-September and 2014 was no different. Similarly to last year with the release of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c, Apple has released two new iPhones to the public, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

Preorder sales for the new iPhone opened on Friday, September 12 and have broken all previous records for iPhone preorder sales. Over four million units were sold in just 24 hours, and sold 9 millions units in the first three days of sales in September. It is believed that most of these preorder sales will receive their new phones starting on Friday, September 19, when the phone will officially be on sale.

Due to the immense popularity of the new devices, Apple has made a point to put a certain number of them aside to allow for walk-in customers to have the opportunity to buy them on September 19. The iPhone 6 will cost $199 from Apple, whereas its counter part the iPhone 6 Plus will cost $299.

The iPhone 6 has once again grown in physical size. Its predecessors, the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s were 4.87 inches in height and 2.31 inches in width and the iPhone 5c was all 4.90 inches height and 2.31 inches in width. The iPhone 6 will be significantly larger at 5.44 inches in height and 2.64 inches in width while the iPhone 6 plus will be even bigger at 6.22 inches in height and 3.06 inches in width. With added height and width, comes added weight as well.

Students at American International expressed a mixed bag of feelings about the new technology.

“The new sizes and added weight are things that I would consider when looking to buy the new iPhone,” said AIC senior Ronja Haag. “I don’t think that I would want the 6 plus because it would just be too large for me as a phone.”

New features of the iPhone 6 and 6 plus, however, are very attractive selling points for buyers. The new design is sleek with a Retina HD display for users. It is also said to be much more efficient than previous iPhones, including an increased battery life.

For those who already love the high quality photos previous iPhones are capable of capturing, their desire to click away with the newest iPhone camera. The iSight camera built directly into the iPhone 6 and 6 plus has a new sensor with focus pixels. The video capabilities have also improved, with the ability to capture slo-mo and time-lapse videos.

“I am really excited about the improved camera,” said Merissia Phipps, a junior at AIC. “The older versions of the iPhone already take great pictures, so I can’t imagine the kind of photos that the newest versions will produce.”

With a new iPhone release there is always the release of new built in apps and software for users to enjoy. Apple Pay is the much-anticipated way of making shopping easier, as well as faster and more secure for users. Combined with Touch I.D. and Passbook technology, one will now have the capability of paying in store or online with a single touch to their phone.

iOS 8 will be the newest software update for all iPhone users. This is being considered the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. The infamous Siri will now be able to control devices within your home. With the introduction of the new health and fitness apps will be able to communicate directly with your doctor.

iPhone users will now have the ability to add their voice to any message, as well as share your location, add names to group chats, and mute or leave a group conversation as they please. Along with the iOS updates, Apple is releasing new software for Mac users called OS X Yosemite, allowing iPhone users to sync their iPhone data with their Mac without ever actually connecting them to one another.

“As a Mac user as well as having an iPhone, I am excited to see how well the new software’s can work together,” says senior Hilary Baker. “In the past it hasn’t been as seamless as they advertised it would be, so I am hoping this time around things work smoothly.”

Overall, the iPhone 6 and 6 plus release will bring improvements and change to all iPhone users due to software updates and improvements. As sales have already broke records, it will be interesting to see if the new devices and software live up to all of the anticipation surrounding them.
