Melisa Loa, the newly appointed Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life at American International College (AIC), recently sat down with The Yellow Jacket to discuss her journey, vision, and commitment to student success.
A first-generation college graduate, Loa holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and sociology with an individualized focus on higher education from Roger Williams University and a master’s degree in student affairs administration from Michigan State University. Her appointment is significant in many ways—she is the first Afro-Latina to serve as Dean of Students at AIC.
A Personal Mission of Access and Opportunity
Reflecting on her role, Loa emphasized the significance of advocating for first-generation students.
“I was a first-generation student myself, so it’s incredibly important to me to provide access and opportunities for college students,” she said. “Working for an institution that shares those values is meaningful. I want students to know that I’m here as a resource and support system. I know firsthand what it’s like to advocate for myself, and I’m excited to be that advocate for students.”
With a decade of experience in both higher education and nonprofit work, Loa sees her role at AIC as a full-circle moment.
“It’s really meaningful to be here,” she shared. “It feels like I’m now able to provide the same support I once received as an undergraduate.”
Embodying AIC’s Core Values
AIC’s mission is built on five key values: access, opportunity, diversity, belonging, and community. For Loa, these are not just institutional ideals but personal commitments that shape her leadership style.
“One way I embody these values is by showing up as my authentic self,” she said. “That means showing up to work with my hoop earrings and my red lipstick and being unapologetically me.”
Beyond representation, Loa believes in building meaningful connections with students by attending events, engaging with student organizations, and ensuring open lines of communication.

Navigating Challenges in Higher Education
As higher education faces uncertainty—particularly with potential changes to federal policies on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)—Loa acknowledges the concerns many students have about their futures.
“As Dean of Students, I continue to show up and advocate for my students in those ways, and then beyond that, making sure to support students, whether that’s answering questions that students might have or talking through different scenarios with students if they want to talk through what happened. Knowing I may not have all the answers, but I’m happy to search for those answers and any resources and support for students.”
A Vision for the Future
In AIC’s official press release announcing her appointment, Loa expressed her excitement about her new role and the impact she hopes to make:
“This role allows me to break barriers and challenge long-standing norms while uplifting underrepresented communities. I take immense pride in knowing my leadership can inspire others to believe in their potential, dream big, and recognize their ability to shape the future. The opportunity to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all students is a responsibility I embrace with dedication. Contributing to AIC’s legacy is a privilege, and I look forward to the journey ahead.”
With a deep passion for student advocacy and a personal connection to AIC’s mission, Dean Melisa Loa is poised to make a lasting impact on the college community.
