Calling All Future Legislators!

Rebecca Gray, Staff Writer

The Model Congress is AIC’s most prestigious program and is the longest running of its type in the nation. It is nationally recognized and this year we will host the 75th Annual Model Congress. Over 150 students from regional high schools will bring over 30 pieces of legislation to be debated formally using Robert’s Rules. Top delegates are awarded with scholarships. The Model Congress convenes on the night of January 8th at the Sheraton Hotel.

The Model Congress offers a unique leadership and networking experience for AIC students as well as the visiting high school students. According to Marisa Najarian of the Model Congress board, “Model congress to me is an opportunity that AIC gives students to learn about recognizing what is wrong in our government and learning the steps necessary to take action while helping these future leaders to become educated.” Many bills passed in the Model Congress have actually later been presented and put into law by the United States Congress.

During the event, a get together for delegates is hosted at the Sheraton Hotel, allowing them time to relax and get to know students from other schools. This year, we are happy to announce that Jim Spinnato, comedic hypnotist, will be joining us to perform. He is well known in the region and regularly performs at Six Flags and Foxwoods Casino. In addition to the hypnotist, students will enjoy an awards banquet at the end of the event.

AIC students will serve as Debate Chairpersons, Clerks, Parliamentarians, and Time Keepers. They will also assist in every aspect of the success of the event. AIC staff and professors will serve as judges looking for the most well rounded delegates to win scholarships. Rebecca Gray, a sophomore Economics-Finance major, will serve as the General Chairperson. Alexander Clark, a sophomore Political Science major, and Joseph Petrone, a sophomore International Studies major, will both serve as Legislative Chairmen. Marisa Najarian is the public relations coordinator and Cameron Akers is overseeing the financial aspects of the event. They have been working since August towards every aspect of planning the event.

Over the years AIC has hosted some notable figures to speak at Model Congress including John Kerry, Joe Biden, and Gerald Ford. It is estimated that Model Congress has affected over 13,000 high school students and over 4,000 AIC students. Dating back to 1940, it is the longest running Junior Congressional Simulation in the nation.
