College Fashion at AIC

What to wear for class? What to wear for a party? What to wear if you just want to grab some food?
College students ask themselves questions like this every single, girls probably at least once more than guys.
What is the meaning of fashion to college students? Does it really matter what you wear?
Fashion is about expressing how you feel and who you want to be. It expresses individuality. Although American International College is a pretty small school, it has people from all over the world and country, so there are a lot of different people with different styles.
Lauren Witherspoon, a biology major freshman who loves fashion, expressed her fashion thoughts.
“I feel like in college it is important for people to express their individuality. In this school I see a lot of diversity in fashion,” Witherspoon said.
She likes to dress stylishly: shorts with a nice pattern, a black t-shirt, a leather jacket, high socks, boots and of course a hat, her number one accessory. This would be a typical outfit for a person like her.
“I love to dress up for some occasions but I also like to look cute for school without being too dressed up,” said Witherspoon. “However, it depends on my mood. If I have to get up early, the comfier the clothes the better for me.”
That seems to be the motto of many students at AIC. Leggings, jeans or sweatpants with an easy t-shirt or a sweater… It doesn’t matter what it is, it just has to be comfortable. If the students have to be fast in the morning to be on time for an 8 a.m., they just grab cozy clothes.
After personal observations, the style at AIC is pretty comfortable. Since there are a lot of athletes, that makes sense. However, girls try to dress comfortably and cute. One outfit that shows this very well is wearing leggings with a long top or sweater and a coat on top of it. Fall is here, so the scarf season already began. It is a nice accessory but also something to keep people warm. Other accessories are gloves, beanies and boots. All these accessories live after the motto: stylish but comfortable!
Megan Coyle, a freshman nursing major, loves this sort of style.
“It fits for me. I can decide fast and it is easy and cozy to wear. I can wear this outfit if I go to class or if a stay in my dorm with friends to hang out or watch a movie,” she said.
Another really important item almost every student has in his or her closet is a pair – or two – of sneakers.
Marie de Vroey, a freshman general business major, expressed her love for sneakers.
“I love my Adidas sneakers. I combine them with everything I just feel like, “ de Vroey said. “I like to wear them to go to practice in my sweatpants and sweater, to go to school with jeans and a cute long sleeve or t-shirt or combined with a dress to go out. Maybe that’s a European thing. I would say, sneakers are a MUST HAVE!”
There is kind of a brand war with Nike versus Adidas. It depends on the person who wants to wear the sneakers. Either he or she prefers Nike or Adidas. The two brands already have similar models.
If you are more of a skater person you may like Vans or Converse. There are a few brands that produce comfortable sneakers because everybody loves them.
“I love Adidas because I think it is more in fashion. My sneakers are just black and white and it is easy to combine them with a lot of different clothes,” de Vroey said.
