Peace, freedom, and the American Tribal Love-Rock Musical “Hair” is coming to the Griswold Theater this April, presented by the Theater Program at AIC.

With “Hair,” the Theater Program presents their first musical it has had since becoming a major at the college.

“Hair” is a musical that invites the audience into the world of the 1960’s anti-war and free love movements by the protestors and hippies of the era. Ten featured roles plus the tribe make up the cast of colorful characters and the wide assortment of issues they all faced.

The musical is told mostly in song and melody with bits of dialogue strewn about to tie it together nicely and tell the story. It touches on issues like the draft, protest, anti-establishment, interracial love and peace.

“Age of Aquarius” as made popular by The 5th Dimension was inspired by the musical and happens to start the show on a powerful note. Other songs include “Hair”, “I believe in Love”, and “Let the Sunshine In”.

“Hair” originally opened in 1969 on Broadway and was revived in 2009. It toured over the world and won a couple of awards for the revival.
