Review: “Girls Trip” — funny, with a good lesson

Kasia Auguste, Staff Writer

Girls Trip, produced by Will Packer, written by Erica Rivinoja, Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver and directed by Malcolm D. Lee, has broken the domestic box office, with a $115.1 million in domestic ticket sales since it opening this past summer. Worldwide, make that $136.3 million.

Released on July 21, Girls Trip has been a most talked about movie.

This movie features some of the most influential ladies in the African-American community. Staring Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish as Lisa, Sasha, Ryan and Dina, these ladies showed us the definition of “Black Girl Magic.”

This movie is a comedy about child hood best friends that rekindle after years apart. Ryan, Sasha, Lisa and Dina are in for the adventure when they travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Along the way, they revisit their sisterhood and rediscover their wild side by drinking, brawling and romance. Although the title may seem feminine, it is guaranteed to bring laughter to all.

This is the first film produced, written and starring African-Americans to break the $100 million+ mark and it is among the biggest grossing movies ever fronted by a black actress or black actresses. With everything that is going on in America today, this is just another example of black intelligence.

In an interview with Vulture, the producer, Will Packer, explained that a part two is definitely in the “talking” stages. “We’re definitely talking about it,” he said. It is reported that all of the ladies will reprise their roles in the sequel, if it happens However, there is no confirmation, just yet.

Girls Trip may be a comedy, but it also teaches women to never settle for less. There are scenes in the movie that support women that are going through relationship problems or even friendship problems. Overall, it is a must-see movie.

These powerful ladies are reenacting the lives of women around the world. It will make you want to plan a trip with your besties just to relive the past.
