Annual Alumni soccer game: a success for all involved
October 18, 2018
On Saturday October 13th, the AIC Women’s Soccer team held its annual alumni game on the Mass Mutual Field at AIC. Although the weather said otherwise, the game was a fun, exciting, and fruitful affair. The game saw many past members of the Yellow Jackets kit up and join in for some 8 vs. 8.
Perhaps the best scene of the day was previous coach and current AD Matt Johnson linking up on field with some of his former players with whom he shared a Final Four appearance with in 2013. Current head coach Kevon Isa, assistants Stephanie Gordon, and Cassie Ashwell were all on the field as well.
The game was part of the college’s 2018 Homecoming weekend and was one of many alumni games held last weekend. This year, AIC athletics started the Yellow Jackets Club – a club where alumni can register as ‘Friends Of…’ a particular team and directly stay involved with the team they have registered with.
According to the athletic department, “The Yellow Jackets Club strives to encourage alumni participation, recognize the endeavors and achievements of teams and individual athletes, raise funds through numerous fundraisers and enhance and expand athletic programs at AIC.”
The alumni game on Saturday provided another opportunity for women’s soccer alumni to join the Friends of Women’s Soccer group in the Yellow Jacket Club.
When asked about the success of the day Coach Isa said, “we had 16 alumni return and we have over 25 members on the YJ club for Friends of Women’s Soccer”. So yes, it was a success!
Following the tailgate and other Homecoming festivities, most alumni stayed for the current team’s 5pm fixture against Assumption College. The team unfortunately recorded a 2-1 loss but is not yet out of NE10 playoff contention.
The team closes out the year with games against St. Anselm College (senior night – Friday, home @7pm), Adelphi University (10/24 – away), and St. Michael’s College (10/27 – away).
