High expectations for the Yankees

Winter is gone which means spring is here. And for some, that means the New York Yankees.

This is good news for baseball fans across the country: the start of the brand-new season kicked off on March 28, 2019. The 27-time World Series champions, New York Yankees, were out to seek retribution.

After seeing their season come to an end in the Divisional Round by their long-time foe, the Boston Red Sox, the bombers underwent a significant change this past off-season.

With the addition of veterans Troy Tulowitzki, DJ LeMahieu, and J.A. Happ, the Yankees are determined to get off to a strong start. Despite exceeding expectations in last year’s campaign, the Yankees felt they deserved more. Aaron Boone, who took over the managerial job in the winter of 2017 had this to say on WFAN Radio about his first year in charge.

“My first year with this group was special, the way they welcomed me in the team says a lot about the guys,” Boone said. “However, the way the season ended still stings. We had a team with an opportunity to chase the ultimate prize.”

Boone was a former Yankee and All-Star in 2003. He hit the series-winning walk-off home run in the 2003 American League Championship Series.

Last season was the first time since the 2009 campaign that the Bronx Bombers won 100 or more games. The Yankees won their game over the Baltimore Orioles in the Bronx. That was the first of a scheduled three-game series.

After a breakout year in 2017, Aaron Judge will look to increase his numbers. He posted a .284 batting average along with 52 home runs and 114 runs batted in. He has since emerged to become one of the stars in the league.

Newcomer, Giancarlo Stanton, also proved his worth in the pinstripes after joining the team last year. His .343 batting average and 164 hits ensured the Yankees place as the league’s second best, just behind Boston.

With the first their 21 games being against American League opponents, the team understands the importance of racking up wins now.

The expectations for the campaign are enormous. However, the coaching staff and the players are very optimistic

Last season, the Yanks finished in second place in the AL East, just 8 games behind the Red Sox. After eliminating the Oakland Athletics in the AL Wild Card game, everyone expected the team to go on a run. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The first two games of the ALDS were played in Fenway park, with the Sox winning game one after a closely played contest. The Yankees stole game two but, went on to lose games three and four.

As of right now, it’s anybody’s game. The strength of the Yankees this season will be their depth and firepower. From the lead of batter to the ninth, the team has enough weapons to cause havoc against any opponent. Manager, Aaron Boone, now has many options at his disposal.

“We’ve gotta have that mindset that our backs are against the wall, every single game,” Aaron Judge said. “In the playoffs, especially in ’17, going down to Cleveland and Houston, our backs were against the wall and we came out and played out butts off. That’s got to be our mindset.”

Although it’s still early in the year, the Bronx Bombers are one of the favorites to lift the World Series Title at the end of this season. Assuming they’ve learned from their past mistakes, their fans will be expecting more this year.”
