On Thursday, April 10th, I had the honor of attending my first AIC Cultural Night. As the new Dean of Students, I had heard from many people on campus just how special this event was. I knew it was something I had to experience for myself—but I could have never imagined just how impactful the night would truly be.
From the moment I walked in, I could feel the energy. The room was buzzing with excitement and pride. Students, faculty, staff, and even members of the greater Springfield community came together under one roof, and the sense of belonging was immediate. The decorations were vibrant, the food smelled amazing, and the atmosphere? Unmatched.
Then came the performances…and let me tell you, I was nearly moved to tears. The crowd responded with so much love and respect as students shared pieces of themselves through dance, music, fashion, and spoken word. The authenticity with which they celebrated their cultures was not only inspiring, it was deeply humbling. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of community, of identity, and of shared humanity.
This event, organized by the ACE program, is clearly a cornerstone of the AIC experience. And now I understand why. Cultural Night isn’t just a showcase of talent, it’s an embodiment of what American International College stands for: access, opportunity, diversity, belonging, and inclusion. These aren’t just words in a mission statement—they are lived out, celebrated, and uplifted by our students every day.
As a first-generation student of color myself, I never had the chance to participate in something like this when I was in college. To see our students not only have this opportunity, but to thrive in it, fills me with so much pride and hope.
In a world that can often feel divided, AIC continues to stand as a beacon of unity and understanding. I encourage all of our students to hold on to these values—cherish them, live them, and lead with them. It is through empathy, expression, and connection that we grow stronger as a community.
Thank you to everyone who made the evening so unforgettable. I’m already looking forward to next year.
Your Dean of Students,
Melisa Loa
