Togetherness

Orange is the New Black was the buzz on campus for many months. People loved the show and were huge fans, in the classroom, in the DC, at school events, there were always people talking about the famous Netflix series.

AIC Junior Shavon Franks said that she has not seen a show better than Orange is the New Black in a long time. It keeps you watching and you do not want to turn it off. Crazy Eyes, my favorite character, makes the show come alive.

If you have not watched the Netflix series already, the 13 episodes will surely keep you laughing and entertained.

Sophomore Jessica Genius, stated that, “I wanted to watch it all in one day, but I needed to sleep, I really did not want to turn it off, I had not laughed so hard in a while, I wish season two will start already.”

The show revolves around Piper Chapman, a woman living in New York City who is sentenced to 15 months in a women’s federal prison. She is doing time for transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her former girlfriend, Alex Vause who is an international drug smuggler. However, Chapman did that dirty work when she was a young broke college girl, now she is an upper middle class law-abiding citizen who has a fiancé and a good life.  Life caught up to her and she was forced to turn herself in. While in prison, Chapman is reunited with Vause, which forces them to re-examine their relationship, and at the same time deal with the very tough inmates.

Throughout the show, inmates tell stories on what brought them to prison, how it has affected the people their close too, and what they plan on doing when and if they get out is explained.  The show is funny and upbeat, it takes you through emotional journeys through the characters perspectives.

AIC Basketball Manager Dominique Morales had good things to say about the show.

“It started off weird but as you get into it, it is hilarious and each characters story makes you keep watching.  It is a show you cannot turn off, it is so entertaining, but I still can’t believe it is based off a true story,”  Morales said.

Aside from the show being great and hearing awesome a review about it, the big picture is how these TV shows, and Netflix series bring people together.

Orange is the New Black is a show that brought discussion and togetherness, but Orange is the New Black is not the only show to do that.

Shows like Scandal, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, also bring people together. People sit and wait for these shows to come on, tweet about the entire show, laugh with there friends as they watch.

The next day is always better than the day of the show, because now you can discuss and find other people that have watched the same show as you.  Even if you are the type to have trouble finding connections with people, generally you can find a TV show you and someone else has watched. Studying in college is great, but watching TV does not always hurt, it sometimes helps.

In college networking and meeting new people is key, if a TV show is what gets students talking and engaging with each other than that should continue.  Although, Orange is the New Black is a fascinating show, it is more than a show at our school, it brought community and togetherness.  AIC is a family atmosphere and with the continuing of good shows we can continue to grow as a family.
