New Photography Club on Campus Drawing Interest

The AIC communication department has created a new club on campus this semester for students with interest in photojournalism.

The club is a student chapter of the National Press Photographers Association, or NPPA.

The AIC chapter was organized by communication professor John Nordell, who will lead as faculty advisor. He teaches photography and history of photojournalism on campus.

His inspiration to establish the chapter on campus was “in response to student interest learning more about photojournalism,” he said.

Nordell initially became a member of the association in the ‘80s when he began his career as a photojournalist.

The club’s first meeting was held Tuesday, September 29, where students elaborated on their desired outcomes.

Leon Nguyen is a senior in the communication department whose love for taking photographs led him to join the organization.

“I am seeing this as an opportunity to learn more about photojournalism and practice my skills in photography,” said Nguyen.

Because this is the first semester the club has been offered at AIC, the structure is rather laid back and student led.

“My goal would be to really allow the student leaders and members to come up with activities for the group that they feel will serve them the best,” said Nordell.

According to the professor and practicing photographer, there are many benefits to being a member of NPPA. One of those benefits is learning through practice.

“Each time you cover an event, you’re going to learn more about how to better cover an event next time,” Nordell said.

Any AIC student is welcome to join the club. Regardless of a student’s major, the club is open to anyone with interest in photography.

Photojournalism gives students a chance to be creative, whether it is by taking the photos or writing the stories.

The first meeting was a success in terms of organizing the structure and goals of the group. Although more members are still needed, the students present were very excited to get started.

“Most of all, I’m hoping to get a fun experience out of it,” said Nguyen.

“I really feel that the positive energy is contagious,” said Nordell in response to the new members.

Although smartphones are acceptable to photograph events, Nordell encourages students to work with the digital cameras the school offers. This equipment will be provided for members by the school.

For now, the immediate goal of the club is to be officially recognized by student affairs at AIC and eventually by the NPPA.

NPPA will meet every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon. The meetings will be held in the communication Mac Lab, in the basement of the dining commons.
