AIC goes bowling!

AIC goes bowling!

Erin Stalker, Staff Writer

This semester, AIC has a few intramural bowling teams that include students, staff and coaches.

Complete teams must feature four to six members. The bowling league consists of teams from AIC, Springfield College and Western New England University.

These teams meet for six weeks at the Shaker Bowl in East Longmeadow, every Tuesday and play three games every week. The teams meet at 9 p.m. to begin bowling, and sometimes may not finish until 11:30 p.m.

AIC bowlers are pretty up on the game, and enjoy the time to socialize as well as the development of skills.

Jacob McCollum is team captain for the Turkey Baggers.

Because I already know him, I had the chance to ask some questions about his team, how he feels about it and what he is excited for the most.

Erin Stalker: So Jacob, how did you hear about the intramural bowling league?

Jacob McCollum: “I saw a flyer about it in the dining commons and thought it looked fun.”

ES: How did you come up with the team name?

JM: “Chris Ryan from College Steps helped me think of a clever and witty name.”

ES: “How did you recruit people to join your team?”

JM: “I talked to my friends from College Steps and a few said yes to coming to bowling and joining my team.”

ES: What are you most excited for every week?

JM: “Trying to get more strikes every week instead of gutter balls.”

The second person I interviewed was a member of Jacob’s team, Harel Broderick. I asked him a few questions about being on the team and what he liked about bowling as well. I also asked him what he looked forward to every week and his special technique on how to bowl.

Erin Stalker: What is your favorite part about bowling?

Harel Broderick: “I like competing with my friends.”

ES: What do you look forward to every Tuesday night?

HB: “I look forward to hanging out with my teammates.”

ES: “What is your special technique on how to roll a bowling ball?”

HB: “I finish with my right foot forward because I bowl with my left hand, and I tend to move towards the right half of the lane I am in.”

ES: What is your favorite part about being on a team?

HB: “Knowing who I am better than and worse than when competing. It helps me with how I should improve my bowling skills and techniques.”

Lastly, I caught up with another member of the team, Sydney Thompson. I asked her how long she has been bowling for, if she has any advice for anyone who enjoys bowling and what the most important thing to remember when trying to get a strike.

Erin Stalker: How long have you been bowling for? Team wise or recreationally?

Sydney Thompson: “I have been bowling for 6 years, even though it doesn’t seem like it because I’m not that good.”

ES: Do you have any helpful advice for those who enjoy bowling?

ST: “Just remember to take it nice and easy.”

ES: Lastly, what is the most important thing to remember when trying to get a strike?

ST: “When trying to throw a strike, keep your steps the same, basically, don’t trip over your feet and try to keep your arm straight when releasing.”
