Geoffrey Owens is the former ‘Cosby’ Show actor who played the role of Elvin Tibideaux. A social media posting went viral recently, with a photo of him bagging groceries at Trader Joe’s.

Since then Owens has been job shamed, but also received lots of support and new job opportunities.

Geoffrey spoke out on his situation when he recently sat down with Good Morning America to speak on the backlash and the support he has been given.

Even he admitted he wasn’t prepared for the support he has gotten.

“It’s been overwhelming, in a good way,” he said on the TV interview.

He also admitted to the devastated feeling he had when he saw the photographs of him online.

“I was really devastated, but the period of devastation was so short because so shortly after that the responses, my wife and I started to read these responses from literally all over the world of support and fortunately the shame part didn’t last very long,” he said.

At the end of his interview Owens said, “No one has to feel sorry for me. I’m doing fine.”

Fellow actors have also come to Geoffrey’s defense on social media. Athlete turned actor, Terry Crews tweeted, “I swept floors after the NFL. If need be, I’d do it again. Good honest work is nothing to be ashamed of.”

Blair Underwood tweeted “#NOSHAME in good, honest, hard work. He’s being a man in doing what he needs to do to provide for himself and his family. Much respect to you sir!”

Pamela Adlon also spoke out on Twitter saying “I had been a working actor for years. Jobs stopped, as they do. I worked in retail. At a flower shop. I passed out flyers. It’s about the work. Work gives you pride and purpose. Your visibility as an actor never goes away. But the money sure does.”

The message Geoffrey wanted people to receive is that no job is better than other jobs. It may look better on a resume or pay more money, but it’s really not better. That every job is worthwhile.

Locally, many support Owens.

Aiesha Goodman from Worcester, shared her thoughts.

“Some jobs are better than other jobs,” she said. “If you have the education level to do a better job then you will have a better job than others. A corporation job is better than a McDonald’s job because you worked hard to have the skill to do that job.”

Aiesha also had said “I think with the money Geoffrey was making for the amount of time he was making it on that show, I believe he didn’t do the right things with his money. He should have been saving and making investments so he wouldn’t be at a point in his life where he has to work at Trader Joe’s for money.”

We also spoke to Nava Ava about her opinions on the situation. She says “I do not agree with the people job shaming Geoffrey. You never know someone’s circumstances or where they are in life so to judge someone for where they work is not right. You should give the same respect to the janitor as you do the CEO.”

She also says that “we have to think about black actors and how difficult it could be for them to land jobs. We don’t know how much money he was making on the Cosby show, he could’ve been supporting his whole family. Those are important things to keep in mind before you judge Geoffrey Owens.”

Geoffrey is doing fine and has many new acting gig opportunities. He has been offered a job from Tyler Perry Studios, and also a guest spot on “NCIS: New Orleans.”
