It’s that time of year again, when all the spring sports get ready to battle the rest of the teams in the NE10 as their seasons start.

Even though the snow still lies heavy on the ground, it has not stopped these athletes and teams in their preparation to be the best that they can possibly be. The men’s and women’s lacrosse teams at American International College are two of these spring sports that are more than ready to be successful this season.

“I am really looking forward to seeing what this season has to bring and what we are capable of achieving as a team,” said junior captain Joshua Gagnon.

“I’m always excited to step on the field with the rest of the boys on game days,” he added.

The Men’s Lacrosse team has already started their season as they fell to nationally ranked Adelphi 18-2 and to Southern New Hampshire University 6-15.

“We missed many opportunities for success during the Adelphi game, but there were great looks we just have to piece it all together,” said senior captain Matthew Biggs. “The second game we played against SNHU we played better and were able to keep the score close until the last quarter when we lost focused and couldn’t quite put a whole game together.”

The men’s lacrosse team gets ready for another battle as they host Post University on February 28th.

“We are looking to get our first win of the season,” Joshua Gagnon said. “The boys have brought a lot of intensity to practice and it is very important for us to get a win in this game.”

Just as the men’s lacrosse team has started their season, the women’sl team is looking to open their season on February 28th against Nyack College.

“Being a transfer, this will be my first year stepping on the field as a Yellow Jacket,” senior Callahan Porcher said.

“I am extremely nervous, but also very excited to see what this season has in store for our team. A big obstacle we as a team have had to overcome is the weather hindering our practices, we’re either inside completely, given limited time on the turf, or playing cautiously due to the icy conditions of the field. As a Floridian this weather is something I’ve had to adapt to quickly because its going to be around for awhile and letting it change how I play wasn’t really an option, but the team has been great about picking each other up after and icy fall and throwing extra layers at anyone who isn’t warm enough,” Porcher added.

As the majority of the players get ready to gear up for the games, other players stand on the sideline while watching their teammates on the field.

enior Whitney McKay is on of these players. Because of her student teaching this semester, she decided to redshirt her senior year of lacrosse.

“Of course it is sad not to be out there with the rest of the girls,” McKay said. “However, I am just happy that I get to be there with them while they play, cheer them on and hopefully give some advice to them from the sideline when needed.”

Both men’s and women’s lacrosse are looking forward to their seasons, rain, snow, hail, wintry mix, or shine. Popular consensus of the athletes is that when games pick up is the best part of the season. Competition is what they put in all the work for, what they put up with the snow and constant schedule changes for.

They have put in the preparation and now look forward to representing American International College in the toughest lacrosse conference in Division 2.
